Web Developer Plus, a blog providing web design/development tips & tutorials, is sharing a slick featured content slider that is built with jQuery & jQuery UI.

It is a tutorial which describes each step (HTML, CSS, JS) & comes with the source files.

Featured Content Slider

The slider auto-changes the displayed content in every x seconds defined & can switch to the clicked item instantly.

In proportion with the size of the "main image", the slider can present a limited number of items (4 in the example).

It is also a proof of "how jQuery UI can help creating beautiful stuff with a very little JavaScript".

It is totally configurable via markup & does not require any scripting. Although the download package comes with various styles, the look & feel of the slideshow can be completely customized.

Slideshow JS

The library is built with jQuery & it is unobtrusive. It offers several options like:

  • number of seconds each image will be displayed
  • if the images will be displayed automatically or manually
  • image counter & controls activation
  • if the images will be displayed randomly or in an order
  • & more..

P.S. Don’t let the blury images in the demo fool you. With quality images, the script offers a nice presentation.

A factor which cannot be overlooked when designing websites, brochures or e-magazines is the all important font type.

Designers need to carefully select the font that best fits the style of the publication, is legible and perhaps a little different from the norm.

There are plenty of retro and urban fonts available for download, however many are very expensive. For those on a limited budget, here are some amazing free urban and retro fonts.

Victor Moscoso

Victor Moscoso

This funky retro font is based on the 1960’s psychedelic poster lettering of Victor Moscoso. It is hard not to think of Cadillac’s and American diners when looking at this font. Compatible with both Windows and Mac computers, it is free for personal use and contains a full set of characters and numbers.

Watson

Watson

Watson is a retro font that still has the wow factor but is also simple and elegant. The lettering is skinny and some of the characters appear three dimensional. Best of all it’s completely free to use, compatible with Windows and Mac computers and contains a full set of characters and numbers.

Thuphap

Thuphap

Categorised as a brush font, Thuphap looks like freehand writing. The ink weight varies on the curves of the letters, as it would naturally do if you were writing on a piece of paper. It is completely free to use, compatible with Windows and Mac Computers and contains a full set of characters and numbers, including several special letters.
